How Our Calculators Work
Transparency is key to trust. Here's exactly how our grade calculation tools work, with detailed explanations of the formulas and methods we use to ensure accuracy.
Weighted Average Formula
This formula calculates your grade by giving different assignments different levels of importance based on their weights.
Step-by-Step Example:
Given: Midterm (85%, 30%), Final (90%, 50%), Homework (78%, 20%)
Step 1: Calculate weighted grades: (85 × 30) + (90 × 50) + (78 × 20) = 2550 + 4500 + 1560 = 8610
Step 2: Sum the weights: 30 + 50 + 20 = 100
Step 3: Divide: 8610 ÷ 100 = 86.1%
GPA Formula
GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, then dividing by total credit hours.
Grade Point Scale:
Example Calculation:
Math (A, 3 credits): 4.0 × 3 = 12.0
English (B+, 3 credits): 3.3 × 3 = 9.9
History (A-, 4 credits): 3.7 × 4 = 14.8
Total Grade Points: 36.7
Total Credits: 10
GPA: 36.7 ÷ 10 = 3.67
Required Final Score Formula
This formula determines exactly what grade you need on your final exam to achieve your desired overall course grade.
Detailed Example:
Given: Current Grade: 85%, Desired Grade: 90%, Final Weight: 30%
Step 1: Calculate current contribution: 85 × (100 - 30) = 85 × 70 = 5950
Step 2: Apply formula: (90 × 100 - 5950) ÷ 30 = (9000 - 5950) ÷ 30
Step 3: Final calculation: 3050 ÷ 30 = 101.7%
Result: You would need 101.7% on the final, which is not achievable.
Scenario Projection Method
The 'What If' calculator uses the same weighted average formula but separates completed assignments from hypothetical future ones, allowing you to test different scenarios.
Current Grade Calculation:
Uses completed assignments to calculate your current standing using the weighted average formula.
Projected Grade Calculation:
Combines current and hypothetical future assignments to show your projected final grade.
Mathematical Precision
All calculations use standard mathematical formulas with proper rounding to ensure accuracy. We don't use shortcuts or approximations.
