Grade Average Calculator

Check your average grade from quizzes, assignments, tests, and exams without adding every score by hand. Enter your results in our free Grade Average Calculator, set the relevant weights, and see your average update as you type.

At gradeaveragecalculator.com, you can also find tools for GPA, CGPA, semester grades, and marks percentages. Use the calculator to review your current scores, then choose a related tool when you need a different academic calculation.

How to Use the Grade Average Calculator

Use one row per assessment or per category average. If homework is worth 30% of your course, enter your overall homework average once with a weight of 30. Giving every homework assignment that same category weight would distort the calculation.

  1. Choose your input format. Select Percentage for numerical scores. Letters and Points are also available and use the tool's preset conversions.
  2. Enter your grades. Replace the sample values with your results. In Percentage mode, enter 90 for a score of 90%. If you earned 18 out of 20 marks, convert that score to 90% first.
  3. Set the weights. Follow the grading breakdown in your course syllabus. For equally important scores, give every row the same positive weight, such as 1.
  4. Add or remove rows. Select Add Row for another result and remove sample entries you do not need.
  5. Review the live output. Your average changes automatically when you edit your grades or weights.

How Your Average Grade Is Calculated

Equal weights: When every assessment has the same importance, an average grade calculator adds the scores and divides by their count.

Average grade = Sum of grades ÷ Number of grades

For scores of 80%, 85%, and 90%, the average is:

  • (80 + 85 + 90) ÷ 3 = 85%

Enter equal positive weights to reproduce this result.

Different weights: A weighted grade calculator accounts for the importance of each assessment or category.

Weighted average = Sum of (grade × weight) ÷ Sum of weights
Course componentGradeWeight
Homework90%20%
Tests80%30%
Final exam85%50%

The weighted average is:

  • (90 × 20 + 80 × 30 + 85 × 50) ÷ 100 = 84.5%

Here, the final exam contributes more than homework because its weight is higher. For more background, read OpenStax.

Understanding Your Grade Results

The Grade Average Calculator shows the average of the entries included in your calculation. If you have entered only completed assessments, it represents your average for that work. When you include the whole course, check that its percentage weights total 100%.

The displayed letter grade follows the calculator's preset scale. Your instructor may use different boundaries, rounding rules, dropped scores, or extra credit. Treat this class grade calculator as a planning tool and compare the result with your course grading policy.

For assessments marked out of different totals, convert each score to a percentage before using Percentage mode. If your course grades by total points earned, the possible points can act as relative weights; averaging percentages equally would give smaller and larger assessments the same importance.

Planning for Your Next Assessment

The Target Average field lets you explore a desired percentage. With positive weights entered, the current tool estimates the score needed on one additional assessment, assuming its weight equals the average weight of your existing entries.

Your next exam may have a different weight. Check that assumption before using the projection to plan your study time. For a separate final exam calculation, visit the Final Grade Calculator.

Grade Average vs GPA and CGPA

A grade average usually combines assessment scores into a percentage. GPA uses grade points and the credits attached to eligible courses. CGPA extends that calculation across multiple terms, following the institution's rules about which courses count.

The University of Maryland's GPA calculation guide illustrates a credit-based method: divide total quality points by total attempted credits included in the calculation. Its grade-point values and exclusions apply to UMD, so check your own institution's policy before converting results. Office of the University Registrar

The homepage's Points and Letters options use preset conversions. They should not be treated as a universal percentage-to-GPA conversion or a replacement for an official transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this calculator free to use?

Yes. You can use the homepage tool for free without creating an account. Enter your grades directly and review the live result.

Can I add more test or assignment scores?

Yes. Select Add Row to enter additional grades. Remove unused sample rows so the calculation reflects only the scores you want to include.

Will the result match my official course grade?

It depends on whether your entries and the calculator's method match your course policy. Category weights, excluded assessments, letter-grade boundaries, and rounding can change the official result. Use the Grade Average Calculator as new results arrive, keeping your scores and course weights up to date throughout the term.

How do I calculate my average grade manually?

Add your grades together and divide the total by the number of grades, provided each has equal importance. For example, scores of 70%, 80%, and 90% give an average of 80%.

What is the difference between a simple and a weighted grade average?

A simple average gives every score equal importance. A weighted grade average considers how much each assessment contributes to your course result, so an exam worth 40% has more influence than a quiz worth 10%.

How do I calculate an average with equal weights?

Give every score the same positive weight in the Grade Average Calculator, such as 1 for each row. This makes every entered grade contribute equally to the result.

Can I enter marks instead of percentages?

In Percentage mode, convert your marks into percentages first. Divide your earned marks by the total possible marks and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 50 marks equals 90%.

Do my assignment weights need to total 100%?

For a complete course calculation, percentage weights should total 100%. If you enter only completed assessments, the weighted grade calculator averages that work using the weights provided. Unentered assessments are not included.

Can I calculate an average using letter grades?

Yes. Select Letters and choose the grade for each row. The tool uses preset numerical conversions to estimate your average, so the result may differ from a school that uses another grading scale.

Is an average grade the same as a GPA?

An average grade usually combines assessment scores into a percentage. GPA combines course grade points, typically weighted by course credits. Use the separate GPA calculator when you need a calculation based on grades and credit hours.

How does the Target Average feature work?

With positive weights entered, it estimates the score needed on one additional assessment to reach your target. It assumes that assessment has the same weight as the average weight of your existing entries. Check your actual assessment weight before relying on the projection.
